I will turn 50 next month and my wife has given me a choice for a birthday present. She will buy me either a BMW Z3 or I can build an audio/video room and upgrade my audio equipment. What would you do?
p.s. anyone who suggests a boxster over a Z3 has got serious problems...I agree with the other heretic -- car over audio/HT any day. Oh, and you can find a German Z3 if you look around carefully if you're worried about the USA moniker.
About the Boxter over the Z3 comment - you must be about 5'5" or smaller, because if not you wouldn't be so happy to jump into that Z3!!! Not to mention, why would you buy a slow sports car? I don't understand that. Definitely look at the Boxter or SLK, both of which are more comfortable and better looking, IMO.Anyway, as I mentioned at the AR/TT site, go for the audio system. Cars come and go, but your wife is letting you turn a room into a dedicated listening/home theater room! Take advantage of that....
Greg,I'm 6'4" and fit just fine into my Z3. As for power, the M3 version of the Z3 (3.2 ltr) is now the 5th fastest 0-60 time for a stock sports car (and way ahead of the SLK or Boxster). Of course, I couldn't afford the M3 version so I've got to put up with a slower Z3 (2.6 ltr) that can still run rings around that poor boxy porsche.
A car versus a dedicated HT room? I suppose you have me there...take the territory when it is offered I suppose (HT expansionist view I suppose).
Take the BMW -- I did. and then slowly get the HT bit-by-bit. Oh, and if you can afford it, go with the larger engine (2.6ltr). The M3 version is supposed to be incredible, but it'll be about $50K all decked out.
Personally, I'd spend roughly $15 a piece & turn your present car into an insurance-free sleeper while turning your already dark basement into a theatre.A 3/4 racing cam; low restriction exhaust; a couple turbos; some nitrous; a couple hefty sway bars; upgraded struts; serious rubber & the Z3 will resemble a joke.
convert the basement which has no windows to cover anyway. Run wall to wall room treatments; carpet & buy some cost effective Maggies; Velodynes; NAD mid-fi.
No offense or anything, but the Z3 is hardly a great car. That South Carolinian rag top piece of dung (along with the new X5 and the 318ti) isn't worthy of the mighty propellor. If you want a Bimmer, buy a real one (i.e. one from the Fatherland). Therefore I'd go for the $30,000 audio upgrade. However, if a Boxster (basically the 911 Cabriolet at half the price) or the new M3 or a Corvette were options, then I'd go for the automobile. Good luck!
I've been playing with sports cars most of my life. I moved back into the audio hobby not long ago, and I've had more enjoyable and fun experiences with it, then any car has given me in years.John
Build the AV room & upgrade your system! You could get killed in
that BMW, some a**hole might steal it, insurance will be ungodly
high, maintenance will cost a fortune! With an AV room & upgraded
system, you dont have to worry about anything except what to play
or watch next! Enjoy.
JohnnyK: run, donīt walk, to your nearest B&W nearest dealer with the $30,000 in hand and place an order for a pair of awesome Nautilus speakers!
Next year, with another "juicy" present from your wife, you can get a suitable amplification for those monster speakers (I would recommend top-of-the-line Mark Levinson power amps).
That's a good way of aging!!!Since you're 50 and I am only 30, chances are
you'll pass over first in the next 20 years. I will try to seduce your widow afterwards!
I owned a Z3 until recently, when I traded it in for a 328i sedan. I got sick of the convertable top...But you'll get more use out of the audio equipment and it won't depreciate as fast as the car would.
I'd say go for the audio gear and listening room...
Do you both enjoy movies at home? How is your present car?
If both of you enjoy the movies, you can have a nice front projection setup with an 8ft screen and DD for that. Then, it can be a family fun.
Boy, tough choice. How about both?Or take the audio gear and buy her the Z3 for Christmas ;)
.
Really? Can we get together so your wife can talk mine into giving
me the same sort of present :-) Unless you've been through a home-
remodeling project before, it's quite a bit more work (and trouble)
than most people realize. But then, if you're posting this question
on this board, I think you're already leaning towards the AV option.
I'd take the AV room over the Z3 if I were in your position. But
then again, my significant other already admitted me into the...
Asylum!! Nurse!!
Enjoy your B-day present._Spike
I know that this is heresy on this board, but go for the Z3! I turned 50 in February and, if push came to shove, I'd give up my system (not QUITE $30,000 worth\, mind you)for the car, which I've had for over 3 years.
At any rate, welcome to codgerdom.
Bill
I'd go for the upgrade just because it would be more enjoyable and more bang for the buck. You will spend more time in the comforts of your own home watching/listening to your system whenever the mood kicks in. Get the car on your next birthday.
If she said a Boxter or a (hehe) miata, I'd say sure, but the Z3? I'd definitely stay with 30K worth of gear!
