I just had to let people know that this unit is wonderful just as a CD player!.
My system is mid range Energy C-8 mains, Denon 5700 feeding a modifed Hafler DH500. I was using a Pioneer PD-65 Cd player and a Pioneer DV-434 DVD player. Well, after hearing this Panasonic RP-91, I removed both the Pioneer unit from my rack.I purchased the RP91 for it's DVD-Audio capability:
List $799 Cost $499 at OneCall.ComWhen I first hooked it up last night, I first tried a DVD video and was blown away by the picture. (It's progressive scan with component outputs), but I expected that.
I then put in Loreena McKennit's The Visitor just to make sure the audio pplayback was okay.
WOW! I'm sorry but WOW!!!!. My family actually came running to see what I had done. It sounded so much better than the Pioneer PD-65 I couldn't believe it! And thats just straight digital out to the Denon, I haven't even had a chance to try any DVD-Audio yet.
Check out this unit!!

Before you bought the Panasonic, were you listening to the Pioneer through its digital output connected to the Denon? If so, are you saying you experienced a "WOW" moment with the Panasonic unit through its digital outs, even though when both units are connected in this fashion they are using the same DA converter. So how could you have a "WOW" moment when both units share the same converter? Wouldn't they sound the same? Please explain.
This unit is very good on video with minor motion artifacts at times, almost unnoticeable. Really, it's a bargain for DVDs. Audio on DVDs sounds the same as my other player. As for standard CDs, it doesn't work well as a transport in my system (using the digital out - coax or optical). It's difficult to quantify but it just seems to lack the ease and naturalness of my other unit (in this case, a Sony DVD 7000). I also notice minute clicks every so often and clicks when starting/stopping and pausing of a CD; to me, this is very bothersome.
I haven't tried it as a CD player.
