 Popcorn movie, of course. This cheese filled "film" offers a semi-fresh Kong experience set in 1973. The interesting part is that Goodman got money out of a Senator to explore a newly found island perpetually surrounded by a giant storm. Got to get there before the Russians. Well, VN is winding down and units are heading back stateside. Poor Sam Jackson wasn't ready to go home. He was thrilled to learn his aviation unit was needed to transport a scientific team to Skull Island for mapping and research. Har, har. As the choppers approach the island disasters begin to occur moment by moment. Hiddleston and Larson survive only to land and begin a great misadventure culminating in finding a near native WW2 survivor, Reilly.

The CGI was good but no the greatest. It was mostly compensated for by the use of fast action. The film had the feel of a movie actually made in the 70's. Lots of bright flat lighting. The dialog was simpleton and the story was just a notch or two above that. The operative theme for the story is death by monsters. Lots of them.

I think most of the cast wished there were no credits listing their names but hey, it's a paycheck.

Take the teens or just stay home and accidentally see it on cable in three weeks.

 Despite some so so reviews- I watched Kong Skull Island yesterday and I was surprised how good it was. A big improvement on the Peter Jackson "Kong" and possibly the best Kong I've seen since the original.

Sure, it wasn't a perfect movie and I would have liked to know more about the Goodman character and the alpha - lead who went from cold-blooded mercenary to righteous hero in a matter of seconds...- But there was a lot to like.

I liked how the mayhem was totally over the top.
The creatures were very creepy, especially that giant spider. Excellent CGI.
Kong was a believable combo of animal rage and intelligence.
I liked that flammable "graveyard" and when the creature went there to vomit up a victim - I couldn't believe what I was seeing! (Kids stay away from this movie)
I liked how the creatures were camouflaged by the surrounding nature and would suddenly appear.

John C Reilly was perfectly cast and stole the show.

Not a movie for all, but I really enjoyed it.

 late 60's/early 70's mashup of Apocalypse Now, Tropic Thunder and Jurassic Park.

Your review indicates I may be right. I'll wait for streaming.

 ...never took itself too seriously, and wasn't TOO stupid...and Brie Larson was REALLY easy to watch.

I recommend it for the summer popcorn movie it is.

These too? I suspect that a case could be made to that effect. Regardless of which blockbuster comic book movie they may have had major and minor roles in.

If this 'Kong movie' is a 'B' class film, perhaps every Kong movie that has preceeded it might also be considered similarly. Now that I think of it, I consider the original film "King Kong"- 1933 to be a 'B' film.

Thanks for the comments which are not far from what I would have expected. I presume you don't have in this film the same corny ending where the giant ape falls from a deadly height, dies, and then some human stands over the ape's corpse while stating " It was beauty that killed the beast".

I guess it seems reasonable that any 'Kong' movie wouldn't be correct without significant amounts of cheese within. Even the 2005 Peter Jackson remake was cheesy. But that one had good cgi...and lots of it. And it had a notable performance by Naomi Watts as she interacted with that big ape that kidnapped her while on the island.

Thanks for going where I might not. I'll see it on a small screen when it becomes available....and at lower cost.
