Just received my deck last week. It played fine on the Star Trek blu-ray disc and a couple of regular DVD's. Tried to crank it up last night and it will play the promos for upcoming movies. But when it gets to the feature and "play" is pressed, nothing. Pressing the play button on the deck itself doesn't work either. I called Panasonic tech support and they were no help. So, it's back to the dealer and this time I'm going for a Sony.

I just watched ST again last night.... I vaguely recall there were quite a few players that had some issues with it, most fixed by firmware. I played it in an Oppo with bitstream audio and I'm pretty sure I detected a <0.5s audio dropout once, non-repetable. Others have reported much more frequent and longer dropouts, also not repeatable as to when they happen. So even the much-ballyhooed Oppo isn't perfect with ST yet, they say they're still working on it. Apparently using the player to do the audio decoding is glitch-free.

You might try ST again with BD-Live disabled, and/or your ethernet cable disconnected, if you have those features...often solves some play problems. Also try wiping your BD-Live cache if you can/have one, sometimes stuff gets "remembered" that interferes with subsequent re-playing.

...I've already boxed the deck back up and it's going to be returned. I don't need this crap. Who knows when it comes back even if I do fix it? The warranty will probably be over by then and I'm screwed. Nope, it's going to be the Sony.

The good thing about Sony is they get the FW updates fast. The even better thing about the specific PS3 model is just about everybody tests a release on it, so the fixes are ready well before BD release if they're dumb enough to not make it work on the PS3 to start with.

I went with a PS3, posted on January 18, 2010 at 20:03:24

after sitting on the fence for a while... I haven't had really any issues with it, except getting use to the controls. Other than that, I wish I had added to my system way earlier.
