I've been out of the loop for a while with respect to the current Panny plasmas that are out there and which are the best performers in terms of bang for buck. Price is not the driving criteria yet, but will enter into decision eventually. Was wondering if you guys might be able to help me with a quick 20/20 on which models to short list and go demo/audition? Interested in 50". Please, no LCD/LED reccos. Just Panny plasmas.

If you want to save a few dollars over the soon to be released 2010 models, then look at the 2009 V-series: these were Panasonic's top performance models of last year. If you want the newest tech and a bit of picture quality improvement and can wait, then take a look at the link below and read about the VT-series: these are Panasonic's top performance models for the new year.

You will need to do some research to find out what the above models offer over their lesser brothers (the non-V 2009 and non-VT 2010 models). Suffice it to say, cheap out and you will be sorry.

You'll probably have to hunt around for it as they don't have it near the wall o' LED TVs. You'll understand why when you see the picture. It was $1250 from Amazon a few weeks ago with free shipping but $1400 today. The price seems to go up and down so be patient and wait for it to drop again.

Best Buy has a 50" on sale for $979 this week. I saw it in the Sunday flyer (and the wife and I saw it in a store last week), but I can't seem to find it on the BB website.

We've had a 42" Panasonic for 3 years and love it. We're thinking of upgrading to a bigger size (LR has limited width available, but the increase from 768p to 1080p should also be worth it). Amazingly, the 42" then cost 1999; whereas the newer 50" w/ higher resolution is $1000 less!

I got a screaming deal on it... provides the majority what the g& v's give , but ooh,, no so called THX stuff,, whooptie do.. I can get it professionally calibrated instead with the major savings and still had enough to get a PS3 for bd /gaming playback.... now I am looking @ the 60"+ models.....but I'll prolly wait till next year. The S model has anti-glare screen so it was worth the extra money above their lower model (don't remember the lower model letter). The G is a level up and has a THX mode and the V is the top of the line. The S has a great picture- I've always liked plasmas over any other TV technology- magnificent really. Cost about $1300 for 50 inch.

I have both the 50 inch Pana TCP50-V10, and the Pioneer Kuro/Elite 50 monitor panels.

I know you said no LED/LCD, but overall, I am also very impressed with SONY XBR-9 in the 50 inch-- T.V.

These are really my top 3.

The Pioneer is close to the Runco monitors that we have used for years for Home Theatre-- at the expensive end!

Good for sure, but stand ready to keep them, and the Pioneers operating-- you'll need both service and parts.

The Pana "V" series is pretty awesome-- for a complete T.V. No, it can't compete with Kuro/Elite Plasma panels, or the PRO Runcos, BUT-- this thing is SO GOOD, that you'll never miss the other two. As an added bonus, the Pana "V" has a RED-HOT digital tuner!

I like that because I'm out here in the Sticks, getting T.V. from Analog translators and digital channels-- both from a distance.

Since I don't believe in monthly payments to anyone for anything, it's Free T.V. and antennas for me. The Pana is GREAT-- both as a HD panel, and as a T.V. You'll need an external sound system-- the speakers are Rat Shack equivalents-- OK for news & weather. If you step-down to the G10 or G15, expect a good T.V., but it is NOT a "V"! The "V" is simply better-- in every way... especially in color rendition.... once broken-in.

The SONY XBR-9 also has a great tuner, outstanding color rendition, and astounding field-depth on a good source.... but not quite as deep as the Pioneer Kuro/Elite panel. No big deal-- nothing is!

I love the SONY a lot. This series will soon be superceded by new technology. The beauty of it is this model is pretty much perfected. Expect years of trouble-free, non-changing performance. The Plasma panels will age, so this SONY can outlast 4 or 5 of the Plasmas.

All of these are 50" panels. If you can find a Pioneer panel, then you'll need a good separate tuner for T.V., and you'll need on-going service & parts.

The SONY is GREAT-- in every way. Don't worry about new stuff replacing it. You can run it 15 years and never get embarrassed.
