Donnie Darko: In one word...wow!

Was I ever surprised!
Don't know where I got the impression, but I was expecting a B-budget horror flick (sometimes, I get in the mood for those). But instead, I got one of the best films I've seen in recent years...maybe ever! The film reminded me of Contact (another favorite) in its thought provoking premise! I absolutely loved the humor, especially the satirical humor! I also felt it genuinely frightened you, because IMO, there are people like Donnie all around us...in our streets, schools, work places. And, you never know when they may snap. The movie also had its moments of tenderness (I actually got teary-eyed in some spots). Great directing...great writing...great acting! Great cinematography. Great music...who can forget the music!!!
Where the hell was this movie during the oscars!? This stands head-n-shoulders above American Beauty, IMHO (as it's been compared against in some posts here).
Wow! Richard Kelly is a genius. I can't wait for his next fare.
Now, if only I can figure out whether the whole thing was an episode in Donnie's mind or whether the events actually took place? Either way would not make the film less worthy of praise.
I think my favorite scene had to be the discussion about the Smurfs.
Wonderful...just wonderful. Highly recommended.
