Documentary on war I have ever seen. I saw a lot from Capa to Capa ( pictures ) to Ford & Frederic Rossif wonderful " tour de force " with his film and Vangelis music & The english anonym films, the....
This one has a particularity, it takes a microcosmos ( a town in France) occupied in the last war, and project a whole fresco on politics, humanity, patriotism, fears; that is a lot more than a dissertation on the last war, it has a cool, distant way to look at the French been divided between the one who choose the Nazis to the communism, Petain to de Gaule, freedom to slavery.
As a French, it is a must, and I was confronted over the years only to small portions take away from the core of this picture.
It was made in 1970, it wa to be seen through the French tv only in 1981.
France was not open against his history, as is still not Germany.
This is essential viewing.
