Have you read her take on the film? Pretty much the same as your's: it's a solidly good film, but it doesn't warrant the status accorded to it, and can't compete with the best films of the European masters.

For my money, Touch of Evil is the superior film, even with the untenable pretense of Charlton Heston's hispanic-ness.
