Because production costs have skyrocketed in recent years, studios want as much of a sure thing as possible. They see a remake as having a built in audience and go with the idea that attracted viewers at one time at least.
Think about it, if you are in charge of green lighting a project for $50 million, and your job is on the line for it you'd probably be making boring decisions as well.
It really is a shame. They desperately need new ideas and better scripts.
