'Bastards': Modern day Noir . . .

Claire Denis gives us the dark, dark tale of a French tanker captain who abandons ship in order to attend to "family problems". His sister's husband has committed suicide and their daughter has gone off the reservation into a world of self-mutilation and sexual deviance. Upon arrival, he rents an apartment in a nice building and soon meets his alluring neighbor (Chiara Mastroianni) who is living alone with her child fathered by a very wealthy, much older man. Marco begins an affair with his neighbor while racing around trying to help his sister and find his niece.

Vincent Lindon exudes a strong masculine vibe as he moves through the film. He has little to say and reveals little of what is really transpiring until nearly the end.

The film begins with Lindon on his ship in the bright sunlight of the open sea and as time progresses, the atmosphere gets progressively darker. There is a brevity of dialog graced by tension, lust, and perplexity.

wonks: 3 out of 5 for atmosphere, actors, and production art
wanks: 1.5 out of 5 for reaching to understand what is going on
