Spoilers-Thought provoking

I find myself pondering many points that were made in this very interesting doc.

I would recommend watching it before reading about it, that is why I titled this spoilers.

The cultural divide is huge. There is a massive expectation gap based on recent history. The Americans are forced to work for maybe half the hourly pay they got at the old GM plant, so from the outset they seem to feel a bit exploited. The Chinese are moving from a 3rd world subsistence economy and seem to feel lucky to be able to have middle class comforts, no matter what the workload or conditions. The scenes in the Chinese plant seem sort of horrifying to American eyes, military discipline, fast paced repetition all day, 12 hour days and 2 or 3 days off per month. Meanwhile the Americans do not conform to Chinese expectations with their 8 hour 5 day weeks and their complaints about tough conditions.

It got me thinking about the human cost of cheap Chinese goods.

One of the biggest surprises was the deeply thoughtful monologue from the factory chairman, who wonders whether his career of starting factories has been good in moving people out of poverty or bad in destroying their natural world. This concern may not affect his fairly ruthless actions, but there is at least some self awareness that I did not expect.

There are no easy answers here. Lots of very big issues raised. A fairly great doc.
