The first part was better but the 2nd part holds up well enough to not ruin the first one. As for scare factor the first was better but the second seemed to have a better clearer story if overly long. I think the main problems a lot of movies like this have is when there are too many characters there just isn't time to give them enough weight and build up like you can in a novel. As a result the characters seem too much like 1 dimensional archetypes. The films probably could have focused on 4 (5 tops) characters.
While watching I thought of Stranger Things but Stranger Things has full seasons so they can get away with a lot of characters and can build them up many many hours.
SPOILER:
I did like one scene that paid homage to The Thing (1982) and that was with a head that turns into a spider. The line "You've gotta be F-ing kidding" is taken directly from The Thing. I am sure there are others who have seen more horror movies than I and recognize other movie homages, but that was great for me as I always liked The Thing.
