Give Lucas and Spielberg a pile of money... and keep them Raoul leftovers in the freezer...

...and tey will turn it into a pile of shit. They will produce somehting wonderfuly suitable for home theater demo at best. That and few Oscars of rather dubious repute.

I am not going to propose some simplistic formula - less money=more art, or something in that vein. However, seeing the Hollywood majors at work (or rather not seeing them, as an effective way of saving one's time and blood pressure) one is always left scratching his head and armpits in bewilderment - how is it possible that so much produces so little?

Many of us have turned away from the LA studios and towards the "independent" and "low budget" efforts. One can not simply say that every such effort is worth remembering or that it will stay in the annals of the cinema. However, many of them are at least enjoyable and the majority is interesting at least in some respect.

So countrary to those two rich guys with their much perfected reverse-Midas touch, here come folks like Todd Solondz.

I doubt any actor in that movie went home with .01% of your typical Bruce/Demi/Harrison/Kevin/Leonardo take. I suspect Kevin's trailer utility bill exceeded the production cost of that movie.

That said, I would take several of its young actors any day over those fat whales. For they were able to create the performances that grab you. The whole movie does, for that matter.

It is not without faults and as it navigates its way between various chiche's it hits them now and then - but mostly manages to produce something fresh. Even more amazing given the potentially dangerous setting - another American school, ugly building, horrible decor and all. Yes, and your obligatory bullies...

And what is the parallel between this one and Eating Raoul? Not much really. Except both are memorable and utterly enjoyable - albeit in very different ways.

Shall we say that Eating Raoul is your best low fat diet?
