Actually, I sort of liked Dune. It is pretty much of a mess but has some good moments. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't read the book making any sense whatsover from the film though. My biggest gripe about it was that it made Baron Harkonen into a complete buffoon.Another sci-fi film that I don't think I've seen mentioned in this thread is Silent Running(1971). It's a good one.
