"Was she or wasn't she" reminds me of interviews with world class former Soviet athletes after the fall of the USSR. Most of the athletes were sorry for the change. In their relm, the Soviet state was seen as a nurturing element, alowing them to pursue their dream. Sure most them recognized that they were used as political pawns, but they also did not have to worry about the economic or administrative aspects of their avocation. It may have been a Faustian bargin in the end; their complicity in exchange for the support they craved. As long as they excelled, the state was viewed (by them) as benign.

Considering the impact Reifenstahl has had upon western culture, the real question should be would she have acted any differently had she known then what she knows now ?
