Insightful film criticism

206.165.142.131

Interesting how certain posters on this forum seem to confuse personal taste with objective criticism. A perfect example is Mr. Hayes' insightful comments on The Three Musketeers -- a brillant essay if I ever saw one. His singular use of the adjective "Ewwww" could set new journalistic standards for film critics everywhere. Typical of today's critical-thinking-challenged filmgoer, who reduces every every cinematic experience to "awesome" or "it sucked".

An example. I personally find David Lynch's ERASERHEAD emotionally repugnant. It is, for me and many other viewers, a very difficult film to experience on an emotional level (which is what the director intended). However, despite my subjective feelings, I would argue strongly that this film is perhaps the most beautifully photographed black and white movie ever made. The use of light and shadow are literally breathtaking and many of the photographic compositions are simply astonishing. (Not hard to understand considering the film took 4 years of painstaking effort to shoot). So what we have is a beautiful film that is very difficult to look at, or more simply, one definition of art.

Such is the nature of film criticism - qualification according to some objective standard. Not to pick on Mr. Hayes (especially if he is 14 years old as his writing style would seem to indicate), but I hardly think "Ewwww" qualifies as insightful commentary.

Just another example of living in an electronic age where everybody who has nothing to say has the opportunity to say it.
