I must have seen this movie three or four times and every time I approach it with some worrysome anticipation. That DVD just happened to catch my eyes yesterday and I managed to bamboozle my wife into watching it again.
It has that undenyable charm around it that makes two hours go by fast. Perhaps a more subtle, classy and civilized brother to Eating Raoul is its best description. Its creator is so full of witt, it shows constantly and you are constantly surprised. In is NOT a boring movie.
As many times as I have seen it, I always look forward to that bedroom scene with the bug-laden plant, dirty-rose colored walls and huge bed. It is truly a movie-making masterpiece, with all the innocent commotion and oh-so-incredibly effective lights. Get yourself ready for Erland Josephson's bed stand light to go on - it is unforgettable and tasteful. If there ever was a movie scene worth being captured on a poster, this is the one.
Perhaps it helped that this time I watched it on the progressive scan DVD player and new HDTV Toshiba set. The quality of transfer, while not on par with things like "Lost in Space" (Yeah, I DO own a copy of that...), is still excellent.
This movie is so filled with humor you just can't stop laughing. Sometimes it so subtle it almost blends into background, sometimes it is wacky and weird and even gross - but it is constantly there. Add to this some European elegance, and your DVD investment is more than justified.
Full of discrete charm and simple raw fun. What more do you need after a day in your office?
