Re: VK...I'm still waiting before I dive into HDTV, is it safe?

***Well you've gone and pushed a bunch of my buttons now. I have been trying for months to get more SACDs, the most I can find is 6. That's right, I have six, two of which are samplers that came with the thing, two more are so amusical I don't play them, two more I just don't care for, but one, one is very nice. Yes, I have one SACD, that I've spent nearly $10,000 to listen to (had to upgrade the whole system after buying the Sony).

Honestly, I didn't mean to push THAT button...

***I bought some headers for my '65 289HP mustang, from the J.C.Whitney catalog (of Chicago, but I bet they went out of business by now). I was able to get one side on myself, but on the other side--the driver's side, the clutch rod was right in the way.

You mean you didn't have a grinder?

***So I drove that mustang thru Kennett Square (the mushroom capitol of the world) with one open header and one open raw cast iron manifold--loosely bolted, all the way to the speed shop.

That sounds so like me...

***When I went back the next day to pick it up, they had just banged on the header pipe until it was dented-in enough to let the clutch rod mechanism pass. I could have done that myself--but knew better. I paid them, and sold the car the next day for $300. Bought a '70 240Z, the finest car I've ever owned. sigh.

OK, so you have seen better days... welcome to the club... it is a good club...

***But you keep steering me off the track. I was back at Overture a few weeks ago looking at a flat screen 16:9 HDTV, I think a Pie-in-ear...how did you decide what to buy?

I talk to some people who know and then just go with whatever exchange they offer. The 34" Toshiba seems to be at or near the top of the hip now.

***Pure impulse?

No, *they* had to twist my arm a bit. Not too much, just a bit...

***Do you have a converter box or is it built in?

THAT is a problem. I tried a couple of boxes so far and they suck - in different ways. I was told to wait for the new Toshiba box, but that one might be few months away. So when I return the two I have now, I will be back to *normal* TV. Well, not THAT normal, the Toshiba does a lot internally.

***Does it do all those i1080 things with frills and interlaces and whatnots?

Yes, the TV does and some boxes do. But at this moment the best recommendation seems to be to wait for the new generation boxes with new processor in them.

***Is it true that there's nothing to watch but Jay Lenno and commercials?

Well, sort of. You will probably be able to receive three or four stations - I get one and sometimes two. So you will be able to see four times more trash. And belive me, you *will* watch trash.

***Do you watch WHYY all the time?

I don't get that one. Besides, I am not big fan of anything public. I decided it was enough after hearing one PBS program on Arab terrorists and how they were abused by the Israelis. Everything has limits and I practice what I preach.

In my view, it is getting practical to buy an HD TV set. In several months good boxes should be here. The programming is increasing, ditto for amount of trash, so at some point there WILL be something to watch.

If I were you, I would probably wait few month and then...
