Who is real "Persona"?

***I tried with the old subtitles and gave up too. So, is it worth watching now with the new ones?

I think so. After all, some consider it among the Bergman's finest word, if not the finest. That alone should be a great recommendation. It is a serious study, even if some means do appear somewhat dated. I think it is a must for anyone interested in Bergman and "serious" cinema in general.

***The story seemed interesting, Wasn't it about a woman taking on the identity of another woman, her nurse? Or did the nurse change her personality?

I believe one can see it both ways - although I don't know if that is what Bergman had in mind. The Ullman's character carries an additional burden - one could certainly dislike the sadistic tendencies in her. And even though Andersson has her own share of nasty feelings, she comes through as a much more human "persona".

The interplay between the two great actresses is something one doesn't see all that often (Autumn Sonata naturally comes to mind) and more that easily justifies the rental.
