***Just curious on your take. The interesting thing is how the Russian
officer in charge of the investigation copes with his situation.
Then the difference of how the criminal is dealt with.

Without any questions. There is no Miranda. Jails are far worse, if fact completely horrible. Also, the punishment used to be much more certain and severe - no revolving door. That was true, I believe, of all communist countries.

***I liked it
it was creepy but not gory given the subject matter.
I liked where the higher up officials kept insisting that Russia
does not have serial killers that is an American phenomenom. Since
your Russian just wanted your view.

As I am sure you know, accurate statistics are nearly impossible to obtain from those years. I suspect there is some truth in what she was saying. I am not a criminal scientist, but it appears that freedom of movement (having cars, being able to change addresses at will, no official registered place of residence required) does make the life of a serial killer easier. So it may be that here serial killers have greater potential.

However, it had always fascinated me that the number of murders in that country with as complete gun control as theoretically possible, was about the same as here, with our 200 million guns in private hands. I guess no gun law had ever rendered a knife or a brick inefficient.

One thing for sure, if you have to be arrested and put in jail, make sure it is NOT Russian jail. Especially nowdays.
