The American Friend

Here you get some of that typical Wim Wenders' beautiful photography, plus, for those of us with Restless Legs Syndrom - a plot that is if not riveting, then at least worth following. I am not big fan of Dannis Hopper, but here he seems to fit in nicely. Bruno Ganz (the star of the angel series of fimls) is quite convincing, in his quiet European charm.

Lisa Kreuzer doesn't need introduction and is definitely worth having around, having done great roles in, of all place, "Basileus Quartet", plus, of course, such unforgettable and oh-so-very-European-seventies hits like "Birgit Haas Must Be Killed", "Kings of the Road" and one of my all-time favorites: "Alice in the Cities".

Unfortunately the tape quality is below par, so their faces are hard to see, but so what, your memory fills the blanks.

There is no question that that decade was colored strong hue in Europe and it may not be your cup of tea, but what do you have to lose? Few bucks? For that it certainly beats some Hollywood (here I go again...) junk , and even if some subtitles will be of your typical unreadable white-on-white veriety, well, that's small price to pay for almost two hours of subtle old-world decadence, where characters pop up out of nowhere, and disappear with not even a puff of smoke.

Still can't figure out, though, what on Earth did the ending mean...
