I think the two films that capture the '90 (or at least late '90) American mentality are The Fight Club, and American Beauty. There's a sense of hopelessness and emptiness in both of those movies. The economy is good; we're big, fat, happy, and lazy; the problems we agonize about aren't really problems.College students from other countries are much more worldly. ANd I think people from many other countries are living much more meaningful lives - whatever that means.
Films are a good reflection of society. I've found good foreign films much more touching and inspiring. Most of the current hollywood products are empty. Others are fakely if not lamely provoking.
