This one, I would say, is rather entertaining. Taken on the store owner's recommendation - "Sex and Zen".
This is the second film that I ended up watching all by myself. The first one - the Dutch "900" was much more mainstream, albeit loaded with goodies.
This one is much more subtle. So much so that it CAN be called art, for there IS art in it. You find art in all those tiny places not occupied by... you guessed it, sex. Ah, and a bit of Zen doesn't hurt either.
Did I say entertaining? Quite so. I laughed my limbs off in some places, and that is not too bad all by itself.
Is it a porn? I would say that if "In the Realm of Senses" crosses the line, then this one comes close, but hesitates at the last moment. There is just too much fun in it, and the mutilation scene is just too funny to ignore.
So no, I would not call it a porn, but certainly an adult entertainment, that's given.
So if you are longing for some of that mysterious Asian insight, and you have successfully masteres the "Senses", then on your way to "900" you might stop and laugh a bit with Zen.
I'd say, it is 95% sex and 5% Zen. I am curious as far as what the Zen experts would say...
Should we perhaps call it the Asian Decameron?
