Dubbing away the vibe...

I was not aware they had dubbed the DVD release of the film. This is unfortunate, as I have yet to see a dubbed release myself that was fully successful. I can remember turning a couple of films off in annoyance over dubbing that basically ruined the films ('Mephisto' and 'Fitzcarraldo' come to mind). I imagine that this lent 'Crouching Tiger' a 'bad-kung-fu-film' quality, although Bruce from DC is on-the-mark with his observation that the Das Boot dubbing was not too bad. People seem to be lauding 'Crouching Tiger' as revolutionary and unique. While I did like the film quite a bit, it really is a highly stylized, big-budget version of a film genre that has been around for quite some time. If it didn't grab you, think about checking out some of the more frenzied, over the top productions that preceded this film. The 'Chinese Ghost Story' series is great as is 'Bride with White Hair'. You'll probably never find a copy, but the lo-fi, gonzo kitsch/mysticism epic 'The Boxer's Omen' is pretty crazy and fully entertaining provided you have an affinity for the type of films that Psychotronic would recommend.
