Watch the giants grow...

They often start slow, but accelerate like rockets.

I commented before on how amazingly different are the two parts of Ivan the Terrible. If Eisenstein is already a great master in the first part, then in the second he is simply the titan with no equals. He accomplished it in just few years, and even more amazingly - with no films in between.

The part one is a masterpiece, but the second one is perhaps the strongest (I am intentionally not using the word "best" as it means little) movie ever made. Period.

In light of that it is also interesting to look at a perhaps even more significant jump by another great creator - Kubrick.

Compare the two works from his early years, just two short years apart: Killer's Kiss and Paths of Glory. How would YOU characterize THAT jimp? Is it not simply unbelievable in terms of a master gaining maturity THIS fast?

Yes, we all know that his future was far less than even (I personally could do without Spartacus, Lolita and 2001...) and it ended up on a, shall we say, controversial note. But that was years later, and at the moment we are watching the take-off of a giant... it is roaring and blinding, so we simply step back, close our eyes and wish him great flight...

And great flight he did...
