Mystery genre twist: Detective and the Femme Fatale.

"Chinatown," "Blue Velvet," "Body Heat," and a Pink Panther comedy: "A Shot In The Dark." "Silence Of The Lambs" reverses the protection roles. I guess DeNiro tried to protect Jodie in "Taxi Driver," too.

I would've mentioned "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner first, but I didn't like it. And if I hear Whitney belt out and butcher that @#&*%! song one more time...

Ugliest guy protecting the babe: Charles Bronson protecting Jill Ireland's First Lady.

Hong Kong films have featured Jet Li and Jackie Chan several times in formulaic "protector" roles.

Then there are all those secret agent films (James Bond didn't do too good a job protecting most of his lovers, as they ended up dead by film's end).
