Sorry to beat a dead horse guys. But I felt compelled to post this
list.
*In chronological order.

(1)Le Voyage dans la Lune-1902. The film that put the sci-fi film
genre on the map. Director Melies earned international popularity.
Pirated by Edison and Lubin Companies in U.S. Voyage is to sci-fi
as Chuck Berry is to rock n' roll.
(2)Metropolis-1926. Lang's monumental vision of the future; magnificent set design and cinematography with great robot(faux Maria).
(3)Die Frau im Mond-1929. Introduced the rocketship countdown: 10-
9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-liftoff!
(4)Alraune-1930. Hitler did not miss the implications of genetic
determinism in this film.
(5)The Day the Earth Stood Still-1951. Landmark "anti-nuke message
from aliens" film. "Behave or suffer the consequences!"
(6)Forbidden Planet-1956. Pulpy, but intelligent sci-fi loosely
based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Inspired producer Gene Roddenberry to create the Star Trek TV Series.
(7)2001: A Space Odyssey-1968. A touchstone of the genre; changed
the visual look of sci-fi films, while advancing sci-fi conceptions.
Note - the 1972 film Solaris, the "Soviet 2001",pushed the concept of
mind-bending alien intelligence even further: Solaris' sentient ocean
is essentially beyond human understanding, it is totally OTHER.
(8)Star Wars-1977. Set new standards for sci-fi fantasy design and
special effects work.
(9)Alien-1979. The ultimate sci-fi horror film. Spawned many
clones.
(10)Blade Runner-1982. The gloomy, but astounding futuristic sets
provide a visual vocabulary for the slum megalopolises where most
of the early Cyberpunk novels were set.
