Agreed that the effects are not the director's responsibility, I guess. (Who's in charge of the overall picture?)

But, these days, even in bad movies, the special effects are usually transparent. So, it seemed worthy of comment that the special effects in this film ("Gladiator") were not transparent.

I'm sure there are any number of classic films in which the special effects -- or even the foley effects or the fight scenes -- are not up to modern standards. And, as you say, that does not detract from the overall value of the film.
