A Beautiful Mind - any DPs out there? (boring tech question)

Did anyone notice that one of the lenses used throughout the film had a flare in the lower left? does anyone know what causes this type of flare?
also: there was an exterior shot at princeton with jennifer connelly (sp?) and adam goldberg. she had her stroller and admits to feeling guilty about wanting to run away. she was in sharp focus and the colors were especially vibrant. the background had an odd soft focus to it. was this just a long lens with a filter or was there some special trick to achieve that effect? (the reverse on goldberg wasn't the same; he was actually a bit out of focus and the background wasn't as interesting.) anybody?
overall a pretty good film. well-acted. worth seeing.
