In the 1970s America had a manly hero in Burt Reynolds. Manly and mustachioed. What does it say about the state of this fine nation that Adam Sandler will be playing his role in a remake of The Longest Yard?
In the original Reynolds played a retired quarterback doing time in prison. He led a ragtag team of inmates to glory against a team of guards. "Although we plan to update quite a few things, the overall story will remain intact. We want to keep the same blend of comedy and grit that made the first one a classic," stated Jack Giarraputo, Sandler's partner in Happy Madison Productions. The film is being set up at Paramount.
