On a more serious, literary (and worthwhile) sci-fi vein...

...Alfred Bester's Tiger,Tiger (aka The Stars My Destination) from 1956. This book (which posits "jaunting" as the technology of the future) set the scene for New Wave cinema and cyberpunk's William Gibson. And as it focuses on one central character, Gully Foyle, it's already cinematic.

Whatever, the first chapter is one terrific read.
