I don't know how to thank you enough, Steve! :-))) My vocabulary is growing. It's been quite a while since I needed that word (the majority of the Japanese films I had access to were way above that level, with very few exceptions... well forgotten by now), and I doubt I will need it soon.

BTW - I stopped counting the times when I was reminded that my last name sounded dangerously close to... you know... Oh, the innocent funnies of diverse cultures!

I don't recall the Sugata. My study of Kurosawa goes back many years, and some of it is already forgotten. But I recall the only film of his that I couldn't crack - that was Ikiru. In a way of excuse, that was the second part of a LONG double-feature, and it tailed all the way into like 1am, I believe, so obviously the experience was tainted. What is YOUR take on it? Should I try it again?
