Re: Interesting reaction.

Hi Steve,

ALL those were funny, yes, except his obsession with the cat - that was I though far deeper a story. I was afraid the last beer glass was supposed to be the crucial and fatal moment. The cat story was too developed to be put in the same line as the train stations - which was overdone a bit - I mean it was not the Trans-Siberian train, mind you!

The cat story is the story in itself, and deserves special analysis, but perhaps the most interesting aspect I found was the treatment of women in the film. You probably know that I am not a feminist - I had many mortal fights over that with our own AuPh... but it was interesting to watch that social dynamics in the post-war Japanese society. I think the last scene with all the women there was probably way too obvious - and it tells me the director was troubled by that aspect too.

His wife BTW was played very well and with class.

There definitely was that feel-good element in the film, and the anti-burgler thing was transparent - I told my wife right away what the last poster was going to be... but all those "faults" are something that allows us to examine the director's mindset - as I said, I did feel there was a lot of him in that movie - don't you agree?
