Jackson didn't shelve Kong...

65.26.187.212

Universal pulled the plug in preproduction because they were worried about competition from Mighty Joe Young...and probably about Jackson himself, who was best known for Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners back then. Although HC was critically acclaimed and earned PJ and Fran an Oscar nom, none of Jackson's movies were big hits. It was Jackon's search for a fantasy project utilizing the forces hired at Weta Workshop/Weta Digital (for KK) that lead him to LOTR.

'Tis a well known tale.

Universal changed its tune after the success of LOTR. Jackson's deal for writing, producing and directing is $20,000,000. Jackson/Walsh Boyens are writing with a new script they deep sixed the 1997 screenplay.

IMO, everything turned out for the best.
