Visually, the equal of any other evocation of early 60s urban America on film.
That said, the film falls because of one reason: Steiger's performance. You cannot have three dramatic climaxes in such a short time; the previous two detract from the critical last one. Specifically, the scene wherein he breaks down whilst being hassled by the crime overlord in his living room is wayyyy over the top.
And that's the problem with much of the supporting cast, as well. His young assistant is way too energized from Scene 1, as are the various customers.
A Hollywood piece of schlock, with an arthouse subject and aspirations. It grips the heart, bringing forth an emotive response, but it doesn't hold up upon calmer reflection.
