Garden State

Saw this one a couple weeks ago in a small theater. I guess it was the director's first film? Overall opinion - while it had some good parts, its not a very solid film. The director (Zach something) chose to play the lead role, which I think was a big mistake. He remided me of a younger X-Files era David Duchovney, but with less emotion and intelligence. (Never thought was possible.) Zach's deadpan stupor made it very difficult to actually care what happened to him during the movie.

On a more positive note, Natalie Portman was terrific in her role. She plays an eccentric young woman who has a big heart, but some very peculiar mannerisms. About a third of the way into the movie, Portman and Duchvney Jr. become significant others. Luckily, from that point forward, Portman gets about as much air time as Zach. Smart move by the director, as she is the saving grace in this film. In fact, without her in this movie, I think it might have gone straight to DVD. If you like Natalie Portman I would suggest waiting to rent the DVD. Otherwise, save your $$$.
