"The Way We Laughed"

What would the Bicycle Thief look like if it was done today? What would La Famiglia be if shot given today's sensitivities? How about Rocco and His Brothers? If De Sica had to make a movie today about hard life of common people in Italy during the fifties... would it be at all like The Way We Laughed?

You will most definitely see all those roots in this work by Gianni Amelio - who is pretty much unknown in the US.

If you love the family movies, give this one a shot. It goes deeply into the relationship between two brothers, and it doesn't find easy road there... the relationship is nothing like a smooth pavement... it is rocky and paved with severe misunderstandings.

An involving human story, even if at some points you will refuse to believe it... why would anyone act like that towards his dedicated brother?

If you had your teeth cut on the Italian neo-realism and if deep human emotions resonate in you, you just might find this story compelling. Just don't expect an ending even remotely resembling a happy one - well, maybe that part is overdone slightly, but the whole 124 minutes is gratifying on balance, and it is bound to produce plenty of thoughts and emotions.
