Re: Last Tango in Paris worth more than a gander

Actually, there is a lot more going on than a Brando payday/performance vehicle!

Sarah Jessica Parker was wrote that when she told a boyfriend a few years ago that she was going to see "Last Tango in Paris", he smiled and said, "Wait til you see the 'sexy parts'!" She said that when she saw the movie, she didn't understand what her boyfriend at the time meant..."Last Tango in Paris" was not a film of "sexy parts", it was a film about death.

Brando's performance is breathtaking...really the only time in his career he is allowed to show so many facets of himself...My favorite scenes today are the one in the ballroom where he quotes Shakespeare and does whatever he can to woo Maria Schneider back, and of course, the scene with his wife's corpse. Devastating.

Schneider is much more than some sex kitten. She gives as good as she gets in this relationship...but when it's over for her, it's over, period and she can do things that will let her just walk away from it as if nothing ever happened. This film is not about a contest or war of wills. She allows herself to be sucked into Brando's maelstrom for a short while, but she has her own demands too. She is the seventies girl incarnate: more sexually liberally than you think she could be, more conservative than you think she could be too.

Bernardo Bertolucci's direction, and the cinematography, editing, and music all create a great, great work.

There is even a quick reference to one of the greatest (if not the greatest) films about the relationship between men and women...a film that generated a great deal of discussion on the board the other day..."L'Atalante."

"Last Tango in Paris" is worth much, much more than just a "gander." Take a good look at what this film has to offer. You'll find a great deal here.
