Coming from way behind the curve - Whale Rider

I waited two years to see it, and the sugar in it still did not turn into alcohol - it remained all syrup.
A grossy over-rated film that only has any fighting chance if presented among the current wave of dreck coming from all directions.
Otherwise no one would notice it. Or notice, spent a few minutes talking about, and then move on.
The girl ain't bad, but to give her all those awards for this very simple and completely straighforward role, with no turns, conflicts, range of emotions, etc. was idiotic. She certainly deserved some credit, but what she received was way out of any proportion.
That too reflects the hunger for good and human characters in the films, but one doesn't need to go to ridiculous length to obtain the satisfaction.
One question I have - how did they film those sequences with whales on the beach? All models?
