This beautifully photographed film tells the tale of a young Czech med student (in love with a surgeon) who is nearly caught while working for the resistance and must flee the Gestapo by taking up residence in the vast Czech mountain country. She finds it necessary to marry a much older man she met in the hospital in order to make her new identity complete. The movie is a tad long but it is well scripted and directed to show the transformation of her life caused by the trials mountain life, an arranged husband, the Nazis, and conqueoring Russians. Thoughtful, colorful, enriching.
The beauty of Ana Geislerova made the entire 2:28 worth it. She received a Czeh Lion for Best Actress and the film was nominated (but lost) for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
