"Snow Falling on Cedars"

This is an excellent adaptation of the best selling novel about a trial in the Pacific northwest involving a Japanese American who is accused of killing a white fisherman in an arguement about disputed farmland. Ethan Hawke is the town's newspaperman who has lost an arm in WW II and is covering the story. Hawke is in love with the accused man's wife, a childhood sweetheart. The story is told in a series of flashbacks to the thirties and the war itself. Max Von Sydow is excellent as the defense attorney. The story is very complex and I think the film makers captured the essense of the book suvccessfully. The venue is a Puget Sound island dduring a rare snowstorm.
