The beautiful, , beautiful, beautiful... ugly... Toni Collette in Japanese Story

One would be hard pressed to find Toni Collette beautiful. If you simply met her you would walk away thinking what an unattractive woman she is.

That would be before you had chance to see her on screen. What she does there is beyond your usual "acting"... she reaches out and grabs you and never lets go. She commands you with brutal intensity and she does it without overdoing anything... just by being herself, and... her character.

What an amazing actress that Australian is! What do the Aussies know about movies and acting that leaves the US in the dust?

Be it as it may, I am only familiar with her two works - the Muriel's Wedding, and Japanese Story. The Wedding, for which she gained 40lb in 7 weeks (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), was as they say her star role, she received her big award for it.

And Japanese Story is something you must experience. I only caught a part of it, but the sheer intensity and depth of acting were truly apart from what you normally see around.

This movie is for someone who enjoyed Passion in the Desert, I can't quite tell you why, but it was that film that kept coming to my mind as I watched the Australian landscape. It was not the overt similarity, more the deep underlining mood, and I hope once you have chance to experience it you will know what I mean.

Maybe we should import some of that acting gene here to the US? Else we are forever doomed to watch Julia Roberts.
