The remake.

The film is incredibly beautiful, and an absolute must for any serious movies lover. It is, however, not as deep as the Tokyo Story, mostly due to some obvious beautification. That beautification creates a visual treat of uncommon proportion, but loses the dry humanism of the TS, by drawing the attention - by a tiny amount, mind you - away from the subject of human souls.

It is obvious this was a homage to Fellini. You will see many familiar processions, this is Japanese I Vitelloni and 8 1/2 mixed with local flavor to create a striking presentation, all set to a "Nino Rota" music with wonderful effect.

Wonderful it is, but I am still not sure it belongs in there. On any given day I would take the TS dryness over this captivating image feast... but this is speaking from the buttoned-up "academic" perspective of ultimate movie making, and life is void of fun if taken that way too much, so Weeds, however beautified, is a wonderful work in its own right, and should be savored as such.

Unforgettable images, great acting, tone, pace, directing... what more does one need?
