In 1950 London leftover wartime rationing survives, so a black market thrives. Vera Drake is a dowdy middle aged woman with a cheerful demeanor who takes care of her sick mother and her two adult atay at home children and her husband. She also cleans rich people's houses. And she also helps young girls by perfoming painless abortions with a syringe and a soap solution. She does not charge for her services (although a friend who refers patients does, unbeknownst to Vera) and she has been doing this for over 20 years.
When a procedure goes wrong and the patient almost dies, Vera is arrested and tried inder the criminal code. This has a devastatiing
effect on her family and friends and her employers won't even provide character references. Grim but riveting and one of director Mike Leigh's best.
