Syriana - saw it & liked it, but.......

.... a bit too much like Traffic in terms of direction style. Similar techniques such as snippets of various stories/relationships that eventually intersect, periodic hand held camera work, scenes with bleached out color etc. I thought these tactics these were overused in Syriana, to the point where they detracted from the movie. I like the fact that Syriana broke from the usually spoon fed, linear storytelling - but as the movie progressed the director's "arty" efforts quickly overshadowed the story. Like 21 Grams, the movie was too self-conscious in that its unconventiality ultimately becomes the main focus. All that being said, I did like Syriana and I plan on seeing it again, when it comes to DVD. As far as it being Oscar material - probably not as its just not user-friendly enough for the audience. I am still leaning towards GN&GL as the big award winner of 2005.
