Surely it IS different. It is all in the details. Your statement, to which I objected, had nothing about those "other" things, that were brought into the discussion later.

The example below is a bad one, as there could be two different distinct flavors to such comments. One would be to say "Overall it is a failure as a film, even though it has a few interesting moments, like this and that". The troublesome one would be "Johnny's handwriting is so incredibly good!" forgetting to mention it was the algebra test that Johnny failed miserably.

Actually, there are two faces to Ebert. When he writes about good or great classics, I enjoy his work, and usually tend to agree, and love his style and depth. But when he starts writing about mediocre mass-culture crap, it is like that person in my second example.

Of course you can say I have not kept up with him... I stopped reading him for that very reason long ago. But there definitely was that flavor of salesman pitch in his popular reviews.
