Apparantly George Lucas is going to do what he claimed he never would, release the first three theactical films on DVD as originally shown in 1977, 1980 and 1983. According to a recent announcement from Lucas & 20th Century Fox these will be available for a limited time between September 2006 and January 2007.Whether these will be as complete and the elements will be cleaned up and in as good shape as they should be for a release of this kind is anybody's guess, but it is a hopeful sign, especially since Lucas had stated that his "auteur" versions (that changed the original films' characters and effects to match his disappointing prequels) were the last word.
