"The Last Temptation of Christ"

By far the best done and most moving religious movie ever made, this clever adaptation of the celebrated Kazanzakis novel features Wilem Dafoe as a tormented and reluctant Jesus who gradulally accepts his calling and mission. Clever conceits involve a friendship between Jesus and Judas, Jesus making crosses for the Romans, Jesus asissting with the crucifixion of Lasarus, and Jesus' ordering Judas to betray him, saying that Judas has the harder role. Made in Morocco on an extremely low budget, the film is beautifully shot and is greatly aided by the magnificent Peter Gabriel score. Now that "The da Vince Code" film is out it is irnoic to rmember the controversy this film caused (I rememeber coming out of the theater sfter seeing it to a curious amalgum of fundamentalist Christians, Roman Catholics, and Jews, all of whom were protesting the film and none of whom had seen it. Criterion has done a splendid job here as usual and Scorcese himself provides the optional commentary, along with selected cast and crew.
