"Courage Under Fire"

Plagued by guilt over a friendly fire incident involving his unit in the first Gulf War, Army tank officer Denzel Washington is assigned to investigate circumstances involving alleged heroism by now deceased helicopter pilot Meg Ryan in another incident in the same conflict. If this investigation proves her heroism she will be the first woman to be awarded the Medal of Honor (posthumously). Waghington's life is otherwise falling apart as he is drinking heavily, has left his wife and family, and is being investigated himself by a dogged reporter unconvinced by the Army's finding Washington blameless in the friendly fire incident. In similar fashion to "Rashomon". Washington finds a wide variation in the version of the helicpter incident told by Ryan's surviving crew members. As I recall, this was the first film set in the Guld war and remains one of the best for its clever juxtaposition of all these elements. Recommended.
