"King Solomon's Mines"

This film is based on the H. Rider Haggard novel about an African guide (Stewart Granger) hired by a woman (Deborah Kerr) to lead a safari to find her lost husband. Her brother (Richard carlson) accompanies the group. Near the start the scene of an elephant actually being shot brings me to tears as his herd is wailing in anguish and trying to help the victim up. The rest of the film is standard African adventure but well done. Adversaries at first, Granger and Kerr gradually fall in love. Toward the end of the story they encounter a tall native who leads them to his tribe in a Shangri-La-like valley. Later they discover a mine laden with jeweals, have another adventure, and head home. Except for the elephant killing, an enjoyable outing.
